This image of two mandarin fish (also called “mandarin dragonet”) was taken in Palau. Recognizable due to its brilliant coloration of green, orange and blues, the mandarin fish is named for its resemblance to the robes of a Mandarin (Chinese) Imperial Officer. The mandarin fish is very small--averaging less than 3” long—which often makes them hard to see. One of the few fish that do not have scales, the mandarin fish protects itself with a smelly, slimy mucous coating that is distasteful to potential predators.
