This image of a humpback whale and her new calf was photographed during a liveaboard expedition on the Nautilus Explorer in January, so seeing whales were not in the plan as they aren’t usually seen in that area until later in the spring. I saw a spout and begged the captain to jump in the skiff for a closer look. He reluctantly agreed but warned me the whale would never let a diver get close to her. I was ready to take my chances. He dropped us in and within minutes they approached me cautiously, and I was within two feet of this majestic mother and her new calf when this shot was taken. At that moment, I felt closer to nature than I ever had. Afterward, the captain told me in all of his years in this area he had never seen a mother get this close to a diver when with a calf. The next year I went on the same expedition in hopes of recreating the experience, but it wasn’t meant to be and I will always consider this one of the most amazing moments in my life.
